February Rising Stars Meeting

The subject this time is “Gadgets.” Some of us have wonderful gadgets and some of us have the “why did I buy that thing” gadgets. Actually some of us have the “what’s this for?” gadgets. Bring them to Rising Stars and we will explore the world of gadgets. We hope we will be able to resolve some of the questions and share some of the gadgets we love. Also we will have a trash bag on hand if need be. Sometimes it is best to say goodbye and have a good night sleep. See you there, all our sparkling stars. – Lynn Doyle, risingstars@omahaquiltersguild.org

It was indeed a big red bow on our 25th year of the Children’s Emergency Fund Project! Our final numbers were an all time high of $16,258.00 raised, which included the gift cards and some additional funds that came in. We donated around 560 stockings, some of which were left from last year, but we still had record numbers of stockings come in this year. We have become very good at what we do and it takes a quilt guild to do all this. This is my final and 25th year as chairperson for the project and I have to say it’s been a most rewarding journey and a pleasure to serve. I love this guild and its members. You are the best-hearted, most talented and generous people I know. I wish you the love of friends and family this holiday season, and His peace. Many blessings to you an yours in the New Year.

Our Holiday Gala and Fundraiser event is Tuesday, December 13th. This annual party is an opportunity for Guild members to enjoy one another’s company, share good food, and raise money for an important cause – Children’s Emergency Fund.

There are many children placed in protective custody, moving from one family to another, moving back home around Christmas, or who are in shelter care, that are left out during the holidays. The Guild Christmas Party provides an opportunity for Guild members to make a difference in the lives of these children.

There are many ways that members may get involved in this worthy cause:

  • Stockings: Please plan to drop off your stocking donations the week of December 5th – 10th at Country Sampler, Sew Creative or Belle Fiore– during regular business hours.
  • Angel Bags: November is your only chance to get an Angel Bag, so stop by our table to pick them up. This part of the project is how we collect toys for the kids—empty stockings just are not much fun! Just bring the bag with new, unwrapped age-appropriate gift(s) in it to the party, and place it in the appropriate box as you come in. Gift cards are also a great solution if you don’t wish to shop. Denominations of $25 are greatly appreciated. Please give any gift cards to an adult at the angel bag check-in table — please do not put them in the bags. See below regarding “What to Put in an Angel Bag” for ideas.
  • Caring Friends Auction: If you were at the October meeting, you have seen some of the quilts and other handwork to be auctioned in December, and you know you will want to own one (or more). So plan to bring your checkbook to the December party!
  • Santa’s Workshop: Tickets will be on sale at the November and December meetings–bring your name labels to put on your tickets. Liz Fleming and her fabulous crew will set up shop at the December party for your browsing pleasure. You can’t win it if you’re not in it! There will be a plentiful assortment of many beautiful items from our generous members. If you wish to donate something, please contact Liz Fleming or Bev Adams.

Calling for volunteers

  • Set-up and take down: Night of the party– We can’t possibly do this big event without many helpers, so please plan to come at 4:00 to help with set up, and then stay after a little while to help put things away.
  • The Stocking Store: Wednesday, December 14th we need help from 9:00—11:00 AM to set up the “Stocking Store”. Then again that afternoon from 1-4 PM as caseworkers come to select stockings and Angel bags for the kids. Also, Thursday, December 15th, we need help in the stocking store once again from 1-4 PM. Contact Pat Sears @402-554-1522 to volunteer.
  • What to put in an Angel Bag: Many of you have asked for ideas for new, unwrapped gift(s) to put in that angel bag you will pick up at the November meeting. Remember, these children are taken from their homes with little to nothing many times—not even a toothbrush. So, anything from personal grooming items to something your own kids might like would be appropriate for an Angel Bag. View a more complete list here.

As you enjoy planning for the upcoming holidays (and are making stockings), just know that collectively, we are a positive spirit for some of the negative that has happened to these children. We can… and do… add to the light. Every year I am amazed by the women and men in OQG—you are just the best of the best. Thank you for continuing to believe!

mickeylawlerIn a relaxed atmosphere of warmth and good humor, this class is an introduction for the non-painter to the use of non-toxic transparent permanent textile paints on cotton fabric suitable for quilts. Students will spend the first day painting skies, water, and more to become familiar with the various effects that the watercolor paints produce when diluted to certain degrees and when applied with brushes, sponges, and bottles. During this time, students will also experiment with mixing colors, manipulating fabric, and painting many special effects pieces for blue skies, sunsets, leaves, earth, and others.
The second day gives students the opportunity to develop more sophisticated color combinations through a concentration on mixing colors, as well as creating individual painted landscapes and several other landscape techniques for interesting results.
Students generally complete about 3 – 5 yards of fabric pieces if weather is good and they are able to dry fabric outdoors. The designs produced are a combination of planning and serendipity and give the students a hands-on basis for future exploration in hand-coloring fabric.
