Program:  What’s Old is New Again
David and Teresa Duwe. Overland Park, KS
February 13, 2024. 7 PM

David is self-taught and began quilting in the early 1990’s. He loved woodworking and thought of the sewing machine as just another tool he could use. He would watch quilting shows on television and go into local quilt shops to study their display quilts. He then would go home and make his own creations. Teresa would get frustrated with having to pick up all the loose threads around the house and didn’t become interested in quilting until after a trip to the Houston International Quilt show in 2005. She too became infected with the Quilting Bug and David became her first teacher.

David is a traditional piecer and Teresa leans toward more modern techniques. Together they like to exchange ideas for new quilts using both of their skill sets. They love to coteach other quilters, whether beginner or experienced, and offer several different classes. They both have had quilts displayed at Houston and Paducah and have had quilts travel the country with the Hoffman Challenge Quilts. They have won various ribbons throughout their careers including Best of Show at the Kansas State Fair.

We will share with you over 40 of our quilts that have been repurposed with antique fabric or recreated with newer techniques. With hand-me-down linens, family pieces and found fabrics, these quilts will give you different ideas so that you can go home and repurpose your own fabric treasures.

Program: A Funny Thing Happened to Me When I Moved to Utah
Patricia Beaver, Salina, KS
March 12, 2024. 7 PM

Patricia started sewing at a very young age. Her father often said that “Patricia is going to die with a needle in her hand.”  She then spent her teenage years in Utah, where she began in earnest sewing and quilting.  An avid quilter, Patricia enjoys all styles of quilts and tries to learn new techniques. She is a lecturer, judge, and teacher. Patricia has taught in California, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Kansas and even Rome, Italy.  In her mission as a teacher, she has vowed to meet people at their own skill level and then challenge them to go one step farther in their skills.

In her program Patricia chronicles her quilting journey with quilts that she has made in each leg of her quilting career. She reveals that she started quilting when she started high school in Utah.  Her family was living in a large city in California, then her father was sent to Cross Roads, UT.  When they moved to Utah, the nearest high school was 75 miles, one way.  The Home Ec teacher told the class at the beginning of her freshman year “You have 4 years of Home Ec.  You will start as a freshman, and by your senior year, you will finish making a quilt.” Once she started, she was hooked, and it has been a lifelong passion for her.

Program: Quilting with Precuts
Karen Hill. Spring Hill, KS
April 9, 2024. 7PM

Quilting is one of Karen’s passions and she makes time every day to enjoy it.  She also creates patterns and teaches about quilting.  Karen helps every quilter to improve their skills and have fun in class.  Her patterns are available at The Quilted Sunflower in Spring Hill, KS.

I enjoy working with precuts because I get to use every fabric in the line without buying yardage.  It allows me to do scrappy quilts MY WAY.  I will discuss things I have learned to help you be successful when creating with precut fabrics.  Unique quilts included in the trunk show will inspire you to take one of your precuts off the shelf and make a quilt!

Program: Bargello and 3-D Quilts
Ruth Anne Berry,  Fife Lake, Michigan
May 14, 2024  7 PM

Ruth Ann owned and operated a small-town pharmacy for many years before converting her store into a quilt shop, The Quilter’s Clinic. She enjoys writing quilt books and designing individual patterns representing a variety of styles and techniques.

In her program, Ruth Ann will show us that 3-D designs create the impression of motion and depth, especially Bargello and other 3D or geometric styles. Bargello looks difficult, but is simple, and a key to a good bargello is the choice of color for the quilt.  She has written two books so far and blogs at www.quiltersclinic.com
