Helping Hands
"Love is in the Quilts"
Angie Reed
The Omaha Quilters' Guild (OQG) makes quilts for disadvantaged children through various area charities. Members have the opportunity to volunteer their time to piece, machine quilt, or tie tops of which the guild provides the fabric and batting. All the guild asks of its members is to provide the time and love. In January, we gather together at the regular Quilt Guild meeting to assemble quilts as a group for these charities.
Helping Hands is known to deliver groups of quilts to agencies for distribution to newborns and people in need. Occasionally, they get a direct call from a concerned individual — a teacher or health care worker that knows of a family that is quietly doing the best they can with what they have. Recently Helping Hands supplied 3 quilts to a mother, father and 2 young boys who were sleeping in their jackets because they didn't have enough blankets to keep warm at night. This committee, with their good deeds, has to be the “heart” of our guild.
This year, the Helping Hands Committee is meeting on a regular basis to help assemble quilts. Just drop in - there is plenty of room for everyone.

Help make a quilt for someone who needs one. You will be welcomed!
Come Sew With Us
Helping Hands meets on a regular basis to work on quilts for charity. We supply the machines and materials, so all you need to provide is you and your time. We meet in the Millard Library from noon to 5 pm on most Tuesdays. We do not meet on the day of any OQG general meeting.
Letter Sent To Helping Hands
Previously the Omaha Quilters Guild (Corrine Mittag) put together a T-shirt quilt for Mid America Boston Terrier Rescue.
It was beautiful. We raffled that quilt off this summer and are happy to say that we raised over $1500 for our medical fund.
We have been collecting T-shirts again and would like to ask if someone from the guild is interested in putting together another T-Shirt quilt for us.
Mid America Boston Terrier Rescue is a 501C3 organization that does rescue work in 13 states. About 60% of the dogs we rescue come from puppy mills. All our activities are done by volunteers. In 2010 we rescued 371 Boston Terriers and Boston mixes. Our medical expenses are very high as we spay/neuter, provide shots, heartworm tests, and microchip all the dogs that come into our program. In addition, we have other medical expenses for dogs with eye problems and other medical conditions they have that have not been taken care of by their previous owners. We do charge for our adoptions but the money collected never seems to equal the money spent for medical expenses. We have many, many, fundraisers every year to raise enough money for our organization.
Our website is www.adoptaboston.com
We are always looking for new ways to make money and the T-shirt quilt was such a success we would like to do it again.
We would provide any materials needed for the quilt.
Please let me know if this is something your group can help us with again. If someone is interested in helping us we would like to have the quilt by mid-April.
Let me know if you have any questions.
