The Omaha Quilters' Guild Education Committee is maintaining old  traditions and blazing ahead with some new ones. As part of the old traditions, our guild makes available our expertise to different organizations, usually in the form of a lecture, informing the public about quilting and quilt history. In the past, our members have been involved with the National Quilting Association Inc. (NQA) conventions that has been held in Lincoln and in Omaha; helped with the showing of quilting in the Omaha Tourist Information Center, shopping malls, nursing homes, television stations, adult education classes and taught many classes in elementary schools. Our guild's
annual quilt show is a major event in educating the general public about quilts and quilting. Demonstration booths show quilting in progress and provide a one-on-one format for dealing with questions about the art.

The Education Committee is very excited to take part in a new program: The Nebraska State Quilt Guild has put together a lecture for fourth grade students which combines the love of quilts with Nebraska history. Many quilt blocks with historical significance are interwoven into a text that over many areas of Nebraska history: homesteading, agriculture, water, schools and transportation to name just a few. The children complete the class by coloring paper quilt blocks and assembling those into a paper quilt which they hang in their classroom. The total classroom times is about 1-1/2 to 2 hours.

The program is well organized and provides the lecturer with all the history, questions and answers. We are working on a traveling trunk for the Omaha area which will include maps and props. Our goal is to make this program available to every fourth grade class in the city and surrounding communities.
